Notice to Users of County General Assistance Program

Pursuant to HF2673, Iowa’s Mental Health and Disability Services (MHDS) Regions sunset on June 30, 2025, which is the end of Fiscal Year 2025 for regions. Shelby County Community Services office in Harlan Iowa will be closing due to these changes which directly impacts Shelby County General Assistance Program since Community Services staff were managing the program for Shelby County Board of Supervisors for the past several years.
After June 30th, Shelby County General Assistance program will be managed by Shelby County Auditor’s office until further notice. Kim Maassen, Shelby County General Assistance Assistant will be helping transition this program over to the Auditor’s office by June 27, 2025. After June 30, 2025, we kindly request future inquiries for General Assistance be directed to the Shelby County Auditor’s office. Their office number is 712-755-3831 and they are located in the Shelby County Courthouse at 612 Court St, Harlan Iowa 51537.

Some of the MHDS staff in the Shelby County Community Services office will be transitioning to the Disability Access point system as of 7/1/2025. Heartland Family Services Rural ACT program will remain in 719 Market Street, Harlan Iowa office location as they are a separate organization not related to Shelby County General Assistance or MHDS System.
